Spirituality is very important because it enriches and deepens our experiences in life. When you get to the soul of the matter you begin experiencing the very essence of the person or the thing.
Spirituality is very important because it enriches and deepens our experiences in life. Very much so because when you get to the soul of the matter, then you are really experiencing the very essence of the thing.
Hi, there, everyone. Today we’re going to do something a little bit different, just slightly different. I want to dabble with spirituality. Really, what spirituality is. Because we’re all made up of the physical, we have our body; we have an intellectual dimension to us, an emotional dimension to us, and we have a spiritual dimension to us. And the reality is, to experience an enriched life, we need to actualize all four of these dimensions. We can’t leave either one behind.
And so I want to dabble ‑‑ I think we’re most familiar with the physical, very easy because it’s concrete, our body. We’re very clear, you know, to the extent that we know, but we are very much aware of our body.
Intellectual, we’re getting a little bit more abstract but we all think, we understand what intellectual is.
Emotional, we all feel, we know what emotions are.
Spiritual becomes much more tricky and that is because it is the most metaphysical of these four dimensions. And that’s why some people will say, well, I’m not really a spiritual person. Other people will describe themselves as a very spiritual person. The reality is that we are all equally spiritual. What makes us spiritual is the fact that we have a soul, which is a spiritual entity. And in that respect, we are all equal in that we have a soul, a spirit within us. However, we are not equal in how consciously spiritual we are. In that way, we differ. And that really depends on a number of things, but what it depends on which is in our control is how much we are willing to develop our spiritual side. And spirituality is very important because it enriches and deepens our experiences in life. Very much so. Because when you get to the soul of the matter, then you are really experiencing the very essence of the thing.
We know this regarding people. When you get to the essence, the spirit of a person, you are really experiencing the person. The body of a person is just sort of a cover to the true person. So the body is, if we engage with the body of a person, we’re not really engaging with the person. That’s why a corpse is not something or someone we want to have a relationship with. And that’s because a corpse without the spirit is pretty much lacking the person behind that body.
So that being said, I want to use a very common question or one form of a very common question which is asked by many people to me in many different forms as a launching pad for just simply explaining the very very basics of what spiritual is or what spirituality is.
And the question, the form of the question is one that was just recently asked to me and so I’m using this form, and that is someone asked me, their daughter asked them if God is married. If God is married. And he asked me, well, how do I answer that question?
And that is a great question, it’s a great question for a kid, and it’s a great question for an adult. If you have that question, it’s a great question because it will lead to really understanding what an entity like God, which is an entity which is spiritual and not physical, is made up of, so to speak, and how a spiritual entity works.
And so here is what I suggested to him, that he should have this conversation with his daughter. And here is the conversation: Have you ever felt the wind? Of course, we all felt the wind. The Wind can be very strong if you go outside during a very strong storm where there are howling winds, winds can knock us over, there are tornados. The wind can be very, very powerful. However, the wind, when we go outside and we feel the wind, we don’t see the wind.
So, suddenly, that brings up an awareness for a child that, oh, there are things which are really powerful in this world even though I cannot see them. That is already a step towards the spiritual, towards understanding that there are entities in this world which do exist, which are very powerful, which I am absolutely sure are there even though I cannot detect them with my eyesight. Excellent.
This not every child is going to be familiar with but there is something which is a dog whistle that is a special whistle that dogs can hear because it gives off a sound on a frequency that a dog’s ear can pick up but a human ear cannot. And we can tell our children about this and ask them, well, what’s going on? Is there really a sound in the air or not? And the answer, of course, is yes, otherwise, the dog wouldn’t respond to them. It’s just that I may not have the tool to pick up the frequency of that sound. But that doesn’t mean that it does not exist. Again, a sound is a spiritual form of something, which we cannot see and sometimes we cannot even hear it even though the sound is there.
Let’s look at fire. Now, a child, depending on the age of the child, may have experienced this as well, if you have a candle and you want to take your finger and move it right through the flame, which you should not teach your child to do but I’m sure you probably have done, as I have done, when you stick your finger through the flame, the flame doesn’t stop you. It’s not a solid physical entity. You can feel the heat. We will get burned by the flame, but the flame is a very spiritual form of a physical presence. The proof of it is is that you can move your hand right through it.
So now the child is getting a very clear understanding of what spirituality is. It’s an entity which is more abstract and not as tangible and concrete. It’s not something we can hold, it may not even be something we can measure in the way we measure ordinary things, with a ruler, so to speak.
Now, here is the last example and the last example is to tell the child to imagine a magnificent castle. Close your eyes and imagine a magnificent castle. The child closes their eyes and they imagine this magnificent castle which they know from all the fairy tales they read and watched on TV. And you say, well, how big is the castle?
Oh, it’s a huge castle. It has eight stories and huge towers.
And you ask them, well, how did that large castle fit into your head? Isn’t your head much much smaller than the castle? They’ll say yeah, well, it was only my imagination. Were you able to picture the entire castle?
Yes.
Here is the thing. The castle that you’re imagining in your head is in a spiritual state, it’s not in a physical state. That’s the reason why we can have an endless number of thoughts in our very small mind, small in the sense of the physical space of our mind, because thoughts are spiritual and, therefore, they don’t take up space.
Once we start to understand how spirituality works, we understand suddenly that God is not a man and God is not a woman and God is not married. Because God is not a being which is physical like we are and, therefore, doesn’t function as a physical human being does. And that’s the reason why God can be everywhere because God is not confined by space. God isn’t even confined by time.
These are deep ideas. But we need to understand these in order to understand the dimension of spirituality. And if you’ve never dabbled with what I just discussed, it may have just answered some very fundamental questions that you have had all your life.
So I would like to ask you to share this with a child, any child. Maybe your children or other children. And believe it or not, children are far more adaptable to spirituality than adults are. And that’s why it’s so important to give them this gift at a young age. Because when they have this at a young age, it sticks with them much better than trying to train an adult mind, which is fixed in its thinking and has gotten stuck in the physical dimension of reality.
And, if you’ve connected with everything I just shared with you, congratulations, you have just graduated Spirituality 101.
